Choosing the Right Stand or Hanger
Most stands on StandRight.com have a Size Guide (e.g. Size Guide: For items 7.5 - 10cm (3 - 4in)). This is a guide to the size of items that can be placed on the stand. It is not the measurements of the stand itself. For the actual measurements of a stand please see the Full Description or click on the Quick View link.
The following list describes what each measurement means, and below that are some tips on how to measure your item to find the best size stand.
Measurements
Stands | ||
Name | Example | Description |
Size Guide | Size guide: 7.5 - 10cm (3 - 4in) | This is a guide to the size of items that can be placed on the stand. It is not the measurements of the stand itself. |
Size | Size '2' | Many stands are known in the trade by Size numbers. These don't relate to measurements, but generally the larger the Size number, the larger the stand. |
Height | Height: 7cm | The height of the stand from top to bottom.If the stand is adjustable or folding then this is measured with the stand unfolded, extended or "open" (i.e. as it would be in normal use). |
Width | Width: 6cm | The width of the stand at it's widest point. If the stand is adjustable or folding then this is measured with the stand unfolded, extended or "open" ((i.e. as it would be in normal use). |
Depth | Depth: 6cm | The depth of the stand from front to back, including any legs or extended supports. If the stand is adjustable or folding then this is measured with the stand unfolded, extended or "open" ((i.e. as it would be in normal use). |
Lift | Lift: 10cm Lift: 15cm, 30cm, 45cm | Some stands lift the article to some degree to allow round items like plates or dishes to be displayed upright without the rim touching the surface it's standing on. The lift is the height of the supports above the surface it's standing on. If the lift is significant then it appears in the dimensions list. If the stand displays several items at different heights then the height of each is in the list. |
Max Item Depth | Max Item Depth: 3.9cm | The maximum depth of the item that can be placed on the stand. Usually the distance between the front struts and the upright back of the stand. |
Min Item Height | Min Item Height: 7.5cm | The minimum height of the item that can be placed on the stand without the back/top of the stand being visible. |
Hangers | ||
Name | Example | Description |
Size Guide | Size Guide: For items 19-28cm (7½in - 11in) | This is a guide to the size of items that can be placed on the stand. It is not the measurements of the stand itself. |
Size '2' | Size '2' | Hangers are known in the trade by Size numbers. These don't relate to measurements, but generally the larger the Size number, the larger the hanger. |
Height at rest (un-stretched) | Height at rest (un-stretched): 18.5cm | This is the height of the hanger from the top hook to the bottom hook, measured when the hanger is un-stretched. i.e. when it not fitted to a plate. |
Min Diameter | Min Diameter: 19cm | The diameter of the smallest plate that the stand might be suitable for. |
Max Diameter | Max Diameter: 28cm | The diameter of the largest plate that the stand might be suitable for. |
Choosing a Plate Hanger
To measure for a plate hanger, place the plate upside down on a table, so you see the back of the plate. Measure from the edge of the rim, up across the back of the plate and down to the edge of the rim on the opposite side. This will be longer than measuring straight across the front of the plate.
Don't make the hanger too tight; it might be better to try a larger size, to put less stress on the plate. Don't make it too loose either; you don't want the plate falling out of the hanger. It needs to hold the plate securely, without being too tight.
The closer the hanger is to its maximum size, the tighter it's going to fit. Make it too tight and you will damage your plate. It needs to be secure, but not tight.
Finally, remember that not all plates are suitable for fitting a hanger to. You need to consider size, shape, profile, weight, material, construction, age, environment, etc.
Choosing a Plate Stand
Choosing a plate stand is fairly straight forward, but here are a few tips to help guide you to selecting the right size stand.
The Min Item Height* should be no less than half the diameter of the plate.
The Maximum Item Depth (shown in the description of each stand) should be a little greater than the height of the plate. The greater the difference, the further the plate will lean back.
Putting a bowl on a plate stand will usually mean the bowl could slide forward and off the plate stand. Bowl stands have a hooked front arm to prevent this.
